A show for the ages! 🌌
There’s no doubt that your feed today and possibly for the next few weeks will be filled with Auroras.

Over the last four days, we’ve had some incredibly strong solar storms, which have given our planet unbelievable displays of Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis.

Last night, Myself, @joshmcca & @kat_khoroshun hit the road to chase the light show across Banff, starting at Vermillion Lakes, Cascade Ponds, and then along the Icefields Parkway to Peyto Lake.

When the show peaked, it was unbelievable, and even when it dipped down, it was still so bright that you could see the green bands of light from the car.

From what I’ve read, last night’s storm is now registered as a G5 class, rivalling the Aurora of May 10th this year.
(The May 10th Aurora was influenced by multiple flares, last nights October 10th was influenced by one powerful X-class flare)
Two storms of this magnitude in one year is a testament to us nearing the peak of our sun’s 11-year Solar Cycle # 25, and is not common. However, we could see this kind of activity until early 2026, so if you missed it last night, don’t let the fomo get you down. I can guarantee you’ll have a few more chances until Solar Cycle # 25 starts its downtrend in 2026; just make sure you visit Canada for the next one. 😉

I hope you were able to see some of it last night.
After getting home at 5 a.m., I’m ready for a nap and to keep an eye out for tonight.

A show for the ages! 🌌
There’s no doubt that your feed today and possibly for the next few weeks will be filled with Auroras.

What an unbelievable 48 Hours.
Thanks to all the First Responders and Local Authorities who helped and continue to help this devastating situation. The fire is now moving through town.
We’ve all moved across Western Canada to escape the wildfires in Jasper, and the fact that 25 000 people are now displaced and having to scatter is something new to me.
These photos are from the 2022 Chetamon Mountain Wildfire on the Northern Section of Jasper National Park.

Dawn light at Pyramid Lake 🏔️
• I’ve photographed Pyramid Island quite a bit over the last 2 years, so going out on a sunrise shoot with @albert__jose I wanted to try something a little different. I’ve seen photographs from this exposed rock outcrop on the shoreline of Pyramid Lake, but wasn’t sure how I’d approach the composition. I tried a few different takes from a higher position balancing the rocks and background, but noticed the straight lines at the farthest point of the outcrop, and felt like they would lead the eye nicely. After some rock hopping and adjustments I’m very happy with how this one turned out. 🤙

It’s been a joy to see friends posts from Ontario to California and even Arizona! As we reach solar maximum we’re in for even more amazing displays, but I’m not sure if we’ll see one like that again for a few years. With that being said, we’re in for another show tonight, so we’ll see how long my prediction lasts.

This Aurora season has had a very slow start, so last nights brilliant display of lights was a welcome treat. 🌌
Even with the moon shining bright and high in the sky, we saw stunning ribbons of green and pink Aurora cast against the northern sky, it peaked shining overhead with fast moving curtains of light.

Yesterdays partial eclipse from Jasper Alberta! We watched the moon eat a chunk of the sun in a fairly thick blanket overcast, luckily right at the peak, we had enough of a break to catch some photos!! This view reminded me of the moody desert scenes from Arrakis in Dune 🌚🌞

So when @mikegerephoto texted me a photo he took of a lone Bighorn Sheep and an Aurora behind it, he sparked my interest in trying something new. Astro-wildlife will be my new niche going forward 🌌🦌

As we enter the spring equinox, we are in store for some pretty amazing shows, tonight looks like it could be an incredible send off, even with the moon full and high in the sky.

Snow day in Jasper ⛄️
For most of the winter I’d been hoping for a snowstorm to get our trees caked in snow. We had a few big dumps here and there but nothing stuck for very long. After two days of constant snow, the sun came out and lit up our fresh powder. With the trees were perfectly droopy and snow covered it was a great day to go out and shoot Jaspers winter wonderland. ❄️🌲

I’ve had much better luck with Sunrises this season, but with warm weather and sparse snowfall the winter wonderland is sure taking its time. Even with this, Jasper never fails to impress 👌

The twin peaks of Mt Charlton and Unwin, with Mt Warren and Monkhead Mountain far in the distance. Snowcapped and paired nicely with pink sunset hues. These mountains are focal points of the Queen Elizabeth ranges that surround Maligne Lake, regardless of the season. 🌄

I was bearry surprised to find one funny looking rock turned out to be a Black Bear in Yosemite! I’ve heard many stories of the bears in this park, so to see one in person was a highlight of the trip!
When we pulled over to the pullout to get some shots from a distance, a bear jam slowly ensued. Eventually a disappointed @yosemitenps staff ran to the bear, clapped to scare it off and let the bear know that all the people stopped in the middle of the road were bad drivers and shouldn’t be bothering it anymore! Felt like I was back in Jasper 😆

September has invited some beautiful colour here in the Rockies. Vivid yellows and greens are visible throughout the Jasper area and lights up the forest. I’ve revisited this scene at Patricia Lake in every season now and Autumn definitely takes the cake.

Exploring Jasper at dawn sometimes comes with a treat. After seeing the moon high in the sky I ran to the Athabasca River to get a clear shot of it setting over Mount Edith Cavell. Happy to catch my favourite mountain with a beautiful glow.

This year’s Perseid Meteor Shower was absolutely stellar! 🌌

If you ever see colours in a meteor that means different elements are burning up in our atmosphere, green/blue means magnesium, orange/yellow is sodium, solid yellow is iron, violet is calcium and red is atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen! Entry speed can also affect the colours seen.

With clear skies and hundreds of meteors it was worth the 5 hour sleep before work 🤟

This gorgeous quartzite giant overlooks the townsite towering over 11 thousand feet. Named after a British nurse who helped allied forces escape occupied Belgium into the Netherlands in WW1.
In her grip is the stunning angel glacier, which gets its name from its shape as a “winged angel” above a towering 300ft cliff. Mount Edith Cavell is an alpine focal point and easily one of my favourite mountains in the rockies.

Last nights Auroras were top notch 👌
Big curtains of Oxygen and arcs of Nitrogen glow banding across the sky. This was a powerful storm ranging from KP5-6 with pillars at the zenith. We’re quite close to the summer solstice so it was a treat photographing the Auroras while there was still some twilight light on the horizon. This made the sky and clouds appear a little more blue and bright. It’s been around a month since my last viewing so this was welcome and worth the late night.

The current of life always flows to new streams.
Here in Jasper a drive up Maligne Lake road never disappoints. It’s a miracle if you don’t run into some kind of critter, and every now and then you’re treated to an incredible sky. I spend most of my nights off driving up this road to enjoy the landscape and scenery. It’s easy to get accustomed to the grandeur that Jasper Represents, so a weekly reacquaintance helps keep it fresh. If you ever visit Jasper I strongly recommend you take a trip up this road via a tour or your own wheels!

Black Bears are born climbers 🧗‍♂️
Being able to scale 100 feet up a tree in 30 seconds is no easy feat. From leaving the den they are taught to climb and continue to do so for not only protection but also in some cases sustenance.
I’m truly enjoying this wildlife season. Can’t wait to share more!

I remember the first time I ever saw wildfire smoke working in Killarney. The sky was yellow and the sun turned red. This is my second summer in the Rockies and it’s been interesting learning the importance of fire to the ecosystem and rejuvenation of the landscape.

“Fires remove dead trees and litter from the forest floor. Shrubs and trees invading grasslands also are killed by fires. In each example, new healthy regrowth occurs. Fire does not imply death, but rather change. As fire was associated with rebirth and renewal in mythology, fire today is recognized as an instrument of change and a catalyst for promoting biological diversity and healthy ecosystems.” - @nationalparkservice

I really enjoy visiting the United States. It’s such a big place with diverse ranges of biomes and landscapes. I’ve road-tripped through twice now and can’t wait to get back.
